Our Journey

In the ‘knowledge era’ of human history, Kisiwa Technical Training Institute (KISTTI) strategically promotes the sustainable development of the nation as a premier TVET institution. From its humble beginnings, KISTTI has grown significantly to become a key middle-level institution. Sponsored by the Catholic Church, it is situated on 17.5 acres along the Kimilili-Chwele-Kabuchai road in Bungoma County.

Located on the eastern side of Kabuchai Hills in West Nalondo Location, Kabuchai Constituency, KISTTI employs 46 trainers through the Public Service Commission, 76 trainers through the Board of Governors, and 64 support staff, serving a student population of 2,272. Registered under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHES&T REG NO.PS/1144/09), KISTTI was originally established as East Bukusu Youth Club (EBYC) by the Kenya Youth Club Association (KYCA) on November 27, 1961, with the aim of empowering youth with skills in shoemaking, carpentry, and masonry for self-reliance and employment.

The institute’s foundation is built upon the vision of Dominic Wetangula and Sylvester Kituyi, who dreamed of empowering youth and turned this vision into reality. KISTTI transitioned to a technical institute on December 7, 2008, and has since expanded its offerings to include a variety of artisan, craft, and diploma-level courses in technical and business fields. From its beginnings with just nine students in automotive and masonry, KISTTI has grown to achieve national and international recognition, proving that with a strong start, persistent effort, and a strong finish, anything is possible.

Leadership and Management

Kisiwa Technical Training Institute (KISTTI) demonstrates exceptional leadership and management under the guidance of Principal Dr. Godfrey Murunga and the Board of Governors. Their strategic decision-making and oversight have been pivotal in driving significant infrastructure improvements and creating an enhanced educational environment. The institute has experienced a substantial increase in student enrollment, growing from 3,200 students in 2021 to 7,062 by July 2024. This growth underscores KISTTI’s dedication to providing quality education that caters to a diverse student body.

As an ISO 9001:2015 certified institution, KISTTI prioritizes research activities, fostering a culture of innovation among trainees and staff. This focus on research not only enriches the academic experience but also generates practical solutions that benefit both the community and industry. Infrastructure development is a key component of KISTTI’s growth strategy. The institute has invested Ksh 59.9 million in the first phase of a new engineering workshop, funded through internal savings. These state-of-the-art facilities enhance hands-on training, significantly improving the overall learning experience.
